NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 28 — Banking, aviation and cross-border trade dominated Somali Magazine’s 2025 100 Most Influential Somali People list, spotlighting sectors increasingly shaping capital flows, mobility and enterprise growth across Somalia and the wider East African region.
The seventh edition of the annual list named Yusuf Ahmed Dhadhaow, Chairman and Founder of Docol Group, as Person of the Year 2025, reflecting the expanding footprint of Somali-owned conglomerates operating across East Africa, with headquarters anchored in Somalia.
In aviation, Ahmed Dahir Nor, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Starsky Aviation Ltd, was named Business Person of the Year 2025, underscoring the sector’s growing importance in regional connectivity, logistics and commercial expansion amid rising intra-African travel and trade.
The annual recognition is increasingly viewed as reinforcing confidence in Somali-owned enterprises operating across East Africa. By highlighting firms with cross-border footprints in banking, aviation and logistics, the awards position Somali businesses as key contributors to sustained regional economic growth.
The listings are also seen as encouraging competition and investment, particularly among companies expanding beyond Somalia into markets such as Kenya and Ethiopia. Increased visibility for scalable business models is helping accelerate partnerships, attract capital and strengthen intra-regional trade links.

Somali Magazine said the 2025 edition attracted participation from more than 1.6 million voters through its official website, following a two-month nomination phase that began in October 2025 and a subsequent public voting process.
The list spans eight categories, including business, politics and leadership, health and education, media and journalism, activism, sports, Islamic scholarship, and entertainment and digital influence, featuring Somalis based in Somalia, East Africa, Europe and North America.
