NAIROBI, Kenya Dec 30 – Veteran Television News Anchor Catherine Kasavuli is dead.
Kasavuli who reigned the airwaves for decades succumbed to cervical cancer at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) on Thursday evening. She died aged 60.
Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) Acting Managing Editor Samuel Editor confirmed Kasavuli’s death.
Until her demise, Kasavuli worked at KBC since 2020 where she was part of the team of legends that were recruited to revamp the station.
Kasavuli was Kenya’s female pioneer anchor to host a live television program for Kenya Television Network (KTN) station in the 1990s. She retired in 2015 before making another comeback again to the screen.
In November 2022, Kasavuli disclosed her battle with cancer in a lengthy post where she exuded confidence in overcoming it.
“It’s not an easy journey but I believe in God’s faithfulness and breakthrough. To anyone fighting the same struggle I love you and we shall overcome,” she posted.
Tributes continue to pour in for the television caster who has been eulogized as a trailblazer and as a mentor to many in the media industry.
Capital FM Senior Anchor Yunia Amunga mourned Kasavuli as a great human being whose memories will live forever.
“May she rest with the angels and in eternal peace, she was a great human,” she said.
First Lady Mama Rachel Ruto has eulogized Kasavuli as a woman of great distinction and accomplishment.
“Throughout her career, she consistently demonstrated a strong work ethic, poise, and professionalism. Even if you did not enjoy the news, you enjoyed watching how gracefully she delivered it,” she said.
Citizen Television Journalist Mashirima Kapombe mourned Kasavuli as a legendary broadcaster who was an icon to many.
Cabinet Secretaries Kithure Kindiki (Interior) and Aden Duale (Defense) have also sent their tributes to the family, friends, and relatives of Kasavuli.
“Catherine was both professional and fearless, the 4th Estate will miss her bold contributions. My deepest sympathies to her family and the media fraternity,” Kindiki said.
