NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 23 – Tiryo Sugar Mills is planning to construct a Sh357.8 million sugar milling factory in Nandi County.
The 1,000 tons of cane per day (TCD) will involve the construction of 800 TCD sitting on a 20-acre plot of land.
Some of the facilities to be put up include administrative offices, a store, sanitary facilities, connection to a septic tank and electricity, landscaping, a parking area, and walkways.
Drilling and the installation of water storage tanks are two examples.
“Other facilities to be set up include a 45 KLPD Distillery and a 5 Megawatts CoGeneration Power Plant which will be incorporated in the future and an EIA wii be conducted for the same,” an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) Study submitted to the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) shows.
“The project is estimated at Kshs 357,840,000 and is expected to occupy a 20 Ha land.”
ESIA identifies and addresses possible direct, indirect, and significant adverse environmental and social impacts that may arise from the proposed project.
It will also satisfy both legal and institutional obligations specified under the Environmental Management and Coordination Act (EMCA), 1999, as amended in 2015, and the Environmental (Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulations, 2003, as amended in 2019.
The proposed sugar mill will be located on L.R NO. 21959/4 (Part) along Nandi Hills-Kimwani Road in Kimwani, Nandi County.
