NAIROBI, Kenya Feb 20 — Inquiry into the conduct of the ‘Cherera Four’ during the last General Election enters the homestretch on Monday as the tribunal convenes for the highlighting of written submissions.
Three of the four Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) suspended over their conduct following a parliamentary inquiry that recommended the appointment of the tribunal resigned.
President William Ruto appointed the tribunal to investigate the conduct of former IEBC Vice Chairperson Juliana Cherera and commissioners Justus Nyang’aya, Francis Wanderi, and Irene Masit.
Masit appeared before the tribunal while Cherera, Nyang’aya and Wanderi opted out through resignations.
Masit’s lawyer Donald Kipkorir took to his Twitter account saying he would discredit evidence so far adduced at the Tribunal by its lead Counsel Peter Munge.
The tribunal heard that the Azimio Campaign, led by the National Security Advisory Council accompanied by Raila Odinga’s lieutenants Raphael Tuju and former Busia Senator Amos Wako, had lobbied the IEBC team led by former Chairperson Wafula Chebukati to moderate the final results and declare a run-off in the event that the Kenya Kwanza candidate William Ruto was leading.
Among those who have so far testified before the Tribunal which is chaired by Court of Appeal Judge Aggrey Muchelule include Wafula Chebukati, former commissioners Boya Molu, and Abdi Guliye.
The three have since retired.
