Kenyan wine expert, Samuel Ndichu, is one of the 11 finalists who will be competing for the top prize at this year’s Wines of South Africa Sommelier Cup.
The Sommelier Cup is a prestigious competition that has participants from The Netherlands, Sweden, Canada, the United States, United Kingdom, Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong, and Germany. There are only two participants from African countries this year that being Kenya and Zimbabwe. The Sommelier cup is held every three years and this will be the second time that a Kenyan will be participating.
Samuel Ndichu, who currently works with UVA Wines, a Portuguese wine importer, was first crowned the winner at the Kenyan version of the competition which was held at Sierra Burger and Wine restaurant in March this year.
He was selected based on his wine knowledge and expertise and now, he is in the running for this year’s Sommelier Cup top prize.
In a previous media interview on the foodie publication Yummy Magazine, Samuel said that he was excited about being a finalist and the prospects this competition would have for his career stating, “For me, it is the exposure I get as an aspiring sommelier not just locally but internationally. I can’t wait to see the Winelands, vineyards, winemakers, and sommeliers. It’s a dream come true.”
The Wines of South Africa Sommelier Cup final competition will take place from September 19th to 26th in Cape Town, South Africa.
Kenyans are continuously getting international recognition for their skills and talents which are not limited to specific fields but even in the wine tasting and food pairing scene.
