NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept 15 – The County Government of Siaya has announced plans to collaborate with Kakuzi Plc to promote avocado and macadamia farming, in a move aimed at expanding agribusiness opportunities for smallholder farmers.
Under the technical partnership, Kakuzi will provide agricultural extension support to farmers in Siaya as they venture into the two high-value crops.
The county will also facilitate farmer visits to Kakuzi’s orchards in Murang’a to learn best practices in crop husbandry.
Governor James Orengo said the initiative is part of Siaya’s wider economic transformation agenda, adding that the county would explore ways to acquire quality Hass avocado and macadamia seedlings.
He noted that training agricultural extension officers would be a priority to ensure farmers receive proper technical guidance.
“This visit has been a real eye-opener on the value of avocado and macadamia farming as poverty eradication options,” Orengo said.
“We are impressed by the professional practices and environmental conservation efforts employed by Kakuzi, which we will seek to replicate in Siaya.”
Kakuzi Managing Director Chris Flowers said the firm was committed to supporting farmers across the country with technical skills to expand access to domestic and export markets.
He confirmed the company will also participate in the upcoming Siaya International Trade and Investment Conference, where it will showcase its avocado and macadamia products.
Kenya ranks among the top global producers of avocados, with growing demand in both domestic and international markets.
The collaboration is expected to give Siaya farmers a stronger footing in the sector while enhancing income diversification and rural livelihoods.
